..What to Expect 

AVA Care’s approach to caring for women is a holistic one (physical, emotional, and spiritual care). It is recommended that you schedule your after abortion assessment four to six weeks after your abortion. At your appointment, one of our staff nurses will meet with you and assess your health. This assessment will include: 1) a medical history 2) checking your vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, pulse, etc.), 3) a finger stick to measure hemoglobin level, and 4) a pregnancy test to determine if hCG (the pregnancy hormone) is still present in your body. You will also be given the option to have STI testing at that time.

The nurse will consult one of our physicians about your after abortion assessment to determine whether any further actions are needed to ensure your health and well-being. If the physician recommends further evaluation, the appropriate referral will be made. Additionally, you will meet with one of our patient advocates; these are women trained to provide support and education to women before and after pregnancy decisions. During this time you will be able to share about your abortion experience in a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental manner. Your patient advocate will provide a listening ear and provide appropriate referrals/resources based on your needs.

Regardless of your pregnancy outcome, follow-up care is always recommended. If you – or someone you know – needs post delivery care (from either birth, miscarriage or abortion), but you don’t know where to go for that help, give us a call.
